Pod coffee machines

Choose the capsule system before the machine.

The machine is the cheap part. Capsule choice, drink size and milk workflow decide whether a pod setup stays convenient after the first month.

If you want one coffee quickly, with almost no loose grounds, a pod machine is still hard to beat. The mistake is choosing by machine discount alone. A £59 machine can tie you to a capsule format that costs far more over three years.

Start with the drink. Nespresso Original is built around short espresso-style cups. Vertuo stretches into mug sizes. L’OR adds double capsules and broad Original compatibility. Dolce Gusto prioritises variety, including sweet and milky drinks.

The four systems

Similar idea. Very different ownership.

01
Best for short espresso

Nespresso Original

A broad compatible-capsule market and compact machines make Original the safest pod system for espresso, lungo and milk drinks made with a separate frother.

Cost note
Usually the widest choice of compatible prices
Watch out
Original capsules make short drinks; they are not the same as Vertuo pods.

02
Best for larger black coffee

Nespresso Vertuo

Vertuo reads a barcode and adjusts the brew for several cup sizes. It is simple and consistent, but the capsule system is proprietary and the coffee character is different from a traditional espresso.

Cost note
Machine deals can be strong; compare ongoing capsule cost
Watch out
Vertuo and Original capsules are not interchangeable.

03
Best value for doubles

L’OR Barista

The Barista Sublime can use standard Nespresso Original-compatible capsules and L’OR’s larger double capsules, giving it more supermarket flexibility than Vertuo.

Cost note
Bundles often reduce the entry price
Watch out
Milk needs a separate frother unless you buy a bundle.

04
Best for drink variety

Dolce Gusto

Dolce Gusto covers coffee, milk drinks, chocolate and other café-style options. The trade-off is that many milk drinks use a second powdered-milk capsule.

Cost note
Check whether one drink needs one pod or two
Watch out
Convenience and variety come before espresso fidelity.

The useful calculation

Work out three years of capsules, not one day of discount.

Example only · 2 drinks a day
35p capsule£766over 3 years
55p capsule£1,205over 3 years

A 20p difference per drink becomes roughly £438. Machine discounts do not erase ongoing capsule cost.

Milk drinks need a second decision

Most small pod machines brew coffee only. For lattes and flat whites you either add a separate electric frother, choose a machine bundle, or use a two-capsule drink with powdered milk. Those routes do not taste or clean the same.

A separate fresh-milk frother is the most flexible. Integrated carafes are the most automatic but demand proper rinsing. Powdered-milk capsules are the least messy and the furthest from a café-style flat white.

Our honest pod-machine verdict

Pod machines make sense for low effort, small kitchens and occasional coffee. They make less sense when you drink several cups a day and resent being tied to one capsule ecosystem.

If you are already questioning capsule cost, compare a compact manual machine or entry bean-to-cup setup before buying another pod machine. The upfront price is higher, but the beans and milk are yours to choose.

Common questions

Before you commit to a capsule.

Which pod coffee machine has the cheapest pods?

Nespresso Original-compatible machines usually give you the broadest supermarket and third-party choice. Compare pence per drink rather than pack price, especially when a milk drink uses two capsules.

Is Nespresso Vertuo better than Original?

Vertuo is better for easy larger cups and a wide size range. Original is usually better for short espresso, third-party capsule choice and a lower-cost compatible market.

Can a pod machine make a flat white?

It can make the coffee base, but milk texture comes from a separate frother or an integrated milk system. Keep the cup small and use less aerated milk than a cappuccino.

Can coffee pods be recycled in the UK?

Many aluminium and plastic systems participate in Podback or run their own collection routes. Acceptance varies by capsule and council, so check the current instructions for the exact brand.
