About the publisher

The questions on a product card are rarely the ones that decide ownership.

Home Coffee Index is an independent UK coffee-machine research and comparison site founded and edited by Ben Murrell.

Founder and editor

Ben Murrell

Ben created Home Coffee Index to answer the awkward questions that sit between a specification sheet and a kitchen: will the lid clear the cupboards, where does the water tank open, what else must be bought, and what will the routine cost after the first year?

He is responsible for source selection, normalising exact-model data, the editorial scoring framework, correction decisions, field-test records and keeping commercial relationships separate from verdicts.

01

Why the Index exists

Manufacturer pages explain features. Retailers explain offers. Reviews often focus on the cup. Home Coffee Index connects those pieces to the ownership decision: body dimensions, working clearance, grinder requirements, milk workflow, cleaning jobs and realistic running-cost inputs.

The database, kitchen-fit checker and ownership-cost calculator are original editorial tools. They turn inconsistently described information into comparable questions a buyer can actually answer.

02

What you can hold us to

Every important claim should be traceable to an exact-model primary source, an attributed independent publisher or an original Home Coffee Index field record. Manufacturer claims stay labelled as claims. Conflicts and unknowns remain visible. No product earns a hands-on label before the photographs and protocol record exist.

Scores are editorial fit judgements, not owner-star averages. Affiliate eligibility does not set a score, remove a caution or decide the order of a shortlist.

03

The next evidence step

The first Home Coffee Index field cohort names five mainstream machines and one fixed worktop protocol. Hands-on Sage Barista Express owner testing has now started with an original photograph and first observations. The programme still remains 0 of 5 field-verified until the body and working dimensions, timed workflow, repeatable recipe and ownership checks are genuinely complete.

04

How the site is funded

Some retailer links are affiliate links. A qualifying purchase may earn Home Coffee Index a commission at no extra cost to the buyer. Home Coffee Index does not currently load display advertising. The manually ranked deal table has also been withdrawn; current prices and stock must be verified with the seller.
