Clean for taste first. Reliability follows.
Milk residue, coffee oils and scale fail on different schedules. One giant monthly clean cannot replace the small jobs after each drink.
General guidance · always follow the manual for your exact modelFive moments that matter.
- 01
After every drink
Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately. Knock out the puck, rinse the basket and leave wet milk parts empty rather than warm.
- 02
At the end of the day
Empty the drip tray and puck bin, rinse removable milk parts and wipe loose grounds from the group or brew area.
- 03
Each week
Wash the portafilter and baskets, clean the shower screen or brew group as the manual allows, and remove coffee oils from contact surfaces.
- 04
When prompted
Run the maker’s cleaning tablet or backflush cycle and replace water filters using the specified product and sequence.
- 05
When scale requires it
Descale with the manufacturer-approved product. Water hardness and usage determine timing; do not substitute vinegar unless the manual explicitly permits it.
Never let milk dry inside.
Automatic carafes still need disassembly. “Auto clean” usually rinses pathways; it does not remove every film from removable seals, tubes and whisks.
Keep water away.
Brush loose grounds and follow the manual for burr access. Do not wash burrs or put water into a grinder unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs it.
Scale is a water problem.
Hard water accelerates buildup. A filter can reduce frequency, but it does not make descaling optional forever.
Open the manual, identify the cleaning cycle, and check which parts can enter a dishwasher.
Different machines use aluminium, brass, stainless steel, silicone and coated components. A cleaner safe for one circuit can be wrong for another.
