Choose the workflow before the machine.
Most bad purchases begin with a feature list. Start with the drink, effort, grinder, space and ownership cost you can actually live with.

Espresso exposes grinder and temperature weaknesses. Flat whites demand capable milk. Long coffees need enough volume without becoming watery. Choose for the drink you make on an ordinary Tuesday.
How much ritual do you want?
Manual machines reward learning and a separate workflow. Assisted machines guide grind, dose or milk. Bean-to-cup and pod machines exchange control for repeatability and speed.
Where will the grinder live?
A separate grinder usually gives the best upgrade path but consumes budget and counter space. Integrated grinders reduce clutter; pod and bean-to-cup machines hide the grinding step entirely.
What actually fits?
Check width, depth and height with the water tank open. Add room for a grinder, knock box, milk jug and the hand movement needed to lock in a portafilter.
What will ownership cost?
Include grinder, beans or capsules, water filters, cleaning products and likely replacement parts. A lower machine price can create a higher five-year total.

| If you value… | Start with | Accept this trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Control and upgrade potential | Manual or semi-automatic | Separate grinder and practice |
| Guidance without pods | Assisted semi-automatic | Larger body and more cleaning parts |
| One-touch milk drinks | Bean-to-cup | Less direct espresso control |
| Fastest, smallest routine | Pod machine | Capsule cost and limited adjustment |
